What To Watch in June
School is out, the sun is hotter, and the AC in movie theaters across the country are blowing to the max. June is here and the summer is just getting started! Check out five projects coming to the big and small screens down below to keep your eye on during those hot summer days and long cool nights.
Fantasmas
Julio Torres made waves earlier this year in theaters with the release of his A24 film Problemista. Now he’s back on the small screen with his newest HBO comedy series Fantasmas. It’s a simple story about Julio losing his golden oyster in New York. But judging by the trailer it’s going to be anything but simple as Torres presents a New York with colors, shapes, and numbers running amuck. Keep an eye out for cameos from Emma Stone, Steve Buscemi, Paul Dano and many more when the six episode show premieres on June 7 on HBO.
The Watchers
For the few people who watched Servant on Apple TV+, you might have noticed a familiar name in the credits of some of the episodes: Ishana Shymalan. If that name sounds familiar, that’s because that’s M. Night Shymalan’s daughter! She makes the exciting leap from the small screen to the big screen with her first feature The Watchers. It follows a young artist (Dakota Fanning) who gets trapped alongside three strangers in an Ireland forest where dark and scary creatures watch them each night. You can check out the scares when The Watchers hits theaters on June 7.
The Bikeriders
I was lucky enough to catch this one in theaters at AFI Fest last year and after some delays due to the SAG strikes (even switching studios), The Bikeriders is finally coming out this June! This period piece is about a group of motorcyclists in the 60s as told through the eyes of Kathy (Jodie Comer), the wife of one of the members of this Midwestern motorcycle club. With an ensemble cast including Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Michael Shannon and more, it’s a classic adult drama we don’t get enough of these days. Be sure to bring your dad (he’ll love it trust me) and catch The Bikeriders in theaters on June 21.
The Bear Season 3
After a spectacular season 2 ended with a chaotic opening night for Carmy’s new fine dining restaurant, that even included Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) getting locked in a freezer, The Bear is back for a brand new 10 episode season. Not much is known about what this newest season is about, but expect a season that traces the trials and tribulation of opening a new restaurant post-COVID and the chaos of following your dreams. And one thing’s for sure: this season will be another excuse for the talented cast to showcase their talent that will probably land them on the Emmys stage once again. Catch up on seasons 1 and 2 on Hulu before the third season premieres on June 27.
A Quiet Place: Day One
The Quiet Place movies have been an intriguing franchise for me. The first two follow a family trying to survive a world where monsters attack any sound heard. It was an intense thriller movie mixed with a family drama that worked well for me. The newest entry hits theaters at the end of this month, and it’s heading in a new direction. No longer directed by John Krasinski, or even focusing on the family from the first two installments, A Quiet Place: Day One is helmed by Michael Sarnoksi (director of 2021’s Pig), and follows Sam (Lupita Nyong’o) and Eric (Joseph Quinn), two New Yorkers on a day that will change their lives forever. The audience will be plunged into the first day these alien creatures attacked one of the busiest places in the US and how the world became quiet forever. You can check out this tense nailbiter when it hits theaters on June 28.
